Since my childhood I had a passion for dance, which is slightly different from my generation as I was not much inclined to Westernized way of dancing; rather the folk dance movements always compelled me to day dream of being a part of any folk dance festival, where I can witness the performances in my own eyes. According to popular belief, when you have an urge for something, it is bound to happen. Without any prior plans, I could pay a visit to Loktarang Festival, the National Folk Dance Festival of India. This year I was in Delhi in the end of January. A part of Republic Day celebrations, Loktarang gave me the opportunity to fulfill my dreams. Out of many dance performances, it was Gotipua Dance that fascinated me the most.
Gotipua is the folk dance of Orissa, which in colloquial language means a single boy. Originated in 16th Century, young boys dressed up as female exhibit a blend of feminine grace with masculine vigor. Bright colored costumes are essential parts of this traditional dance and the bright make up of the performers is impossible to go unnoticed. I was astonished to watch the acrobatic movements that are only possible through a severe training and practice. Each and every posture of this dance form is a real treat for the eyes, which will compel you to even blink your eyes. I will preserve this experience as one of the treasured memories of my life.
